When you think about recruiting, it’s easy to assume coaches are only looking for the best scorer, the tallest player, or whoever has the most impressive highlight video.

If you’re a basketball player who wants to play in college, you might be wondering when you’re supposed to start thinking about recruiting. Maybe you’re already in high school and feel like you’re behind, or maybe you’re younger and have no idea where to start. The truth is, there is no perfect age to begin preparing for your future.

One of the biggest mistakes I see players make during recruiting is waiting for coaches to find them. The reality is, you can take control of your recruiting process by introducing yourself to the schools you are interested in. Sending a coach an email might feel intimidating at first, but remember: you aren't bothering them. You're letting them know who you are and allowing them to learn more about you as a player.
